In Chicago, Illinois and our nation, all persons and families have a right to a quality life that includes decent, affordable housing. Significant resources have been committed to this vision, mostly to the benefit of moderate, middle and upper income families.
With realistic economic assumptions, consideration of place-based challenges, and with the utilization of diverse and cost-efficient methods, we can have a city, state and country where more affordable housing is created for truly low income, working class families.
Obvious success to this end using existing resources will foster housing opportunities in higher income areas;
- complement community development efforts in inner city and rural areas; and
- attract greater resources needed from all levels of government.
Therefore, my personal mission and public Housing Quest is to change how we produce affordable housing for low income people, especially working class families, and to do so by
- Soliciting the input of influential and credible people among non-profit and for-profit developers, affordable housing and social justice advocates, foundation and corporate representatives, lenders, educators and government officials;
- Offering my own ideas, proposals and research to policy makers and the public at-large, as well as fresh thinking about the changing roles of community development corporations, banks and foundations;
- Participating in and promoting dialogue on reform and innovation in the affordable housing field; and ultimately
- Securing employment with an organization or institution committed to policy change in support of low-income, working class families.
